Grieving Your Own Way: Trusting Your Unique Path Through Loss

It’s Not About Doing It Wrong β€” It’s About Tuning In to Who You Are

I was sitting in my psychologist’s office, still numb from losing Jeremy, when she slid a prescription across the desk.

“This will help,” she said.

I nodded and simply didn’t have the energy to argue, so I filled it and brought it home. Took one dose.

And the moment it hit my system, I knew. This wasn’t help. This was a shutdown.

I could feel my edges softening β€” not in a healing way, but in a disappearing way. Like someone was turning down the volume on everything that made me me.

I never took another pill.

Not because medication is wrong. But because I knew β€” in my gut, in my spirit β€” that wasn’t my path. We are meant to grieve our own way.

It’s Not About Doing It Wrong

Here’s what I want you to hear: It’s not about doing it wrong. It’s about taking your pace and tuning in to who you are.

We all need to feel. We all need to hear. And then we determine the best fit.

When we do that β€” when we tune in instead of comply β€” we can encounter the Spirit that will guide us through it. Not with dependency. Not with independency. But in relationship.

He always allows us to choose. He just helps us make fewer mistakes when we listen.

Forged in the Fire

My relationship with God was forged in the fire. Every time I deviate toward cultural practices β€” medication, stages, timelines β€” it takes me out of discerning and processing spiritually.

So I learned to trust what I was hearing.

Maybe you’ve felt that pressure too β€” to medicate, to follow the stages, to grieve on someone else’s timeline.

And maybe, like me, you knew in your gut: That’s not my path.

You Were Made for This

Here’s the truth: You were made to be an individual reflection of God’s nature.

Not a copy of someone else’s healing. Not a textbook case. Not a cultural checklist.

Your grief is yours. Your path is yours. And the Spirit of Truth will guide you if you let Him.
